[About the Chieftain Karaljuk – Novak]
There was a man by nature similar to a lion (a certain Novak); /Karaljuk (Novak) – a chieftain in the regions under the Despot’s rule who inflicted great damages on Turkish possessions./ and he (was) among the most illustrious from ancient times, (as well as) under the hand of the namesake (Stefan) and before him; and he, in a bandit-like manner, disturbed the hearts of the Ismailian lands. Therefore, the emperor (Suleiman) sought to have him executed. The response (from Stefan) was that he, as a bandit, dwells in the mountains. And also, the Bulgarian cities had rebelled (under the leadership) of the Bulgarian emperor’s sons. Therefore, before this, the Muslim emperor rose and coming to Temsko, captured it in battle. And he sent messengers to this pious despot saying: “I only want to pass through your territories without any harm.” For the land was not yet divided. He, departing towards the Sheep Field by Toplica, the aforementioned man, Karaljuk by name (i.e., Novak), having taken some items from the imperial camps, brought them, and the despot again returned these.
