[On the Despot’s Death]
But the blessed (Stefan), on one hand, was sending abundance and gifts to the emperor, and on the other hand, he was traveling the land to further elevate a divine temple. And from there he heard that the island (Hungarian territory) was taken. Rising up, he went towards Belgrade. When he was at a place called Glavica, having dined, he went out to hunt; and while still hunting, he took a hawk onto his arm. Taking it, he did not carry it properly, he, who until now had done everything properly and to everyone’s admiration; and he swayed from side to side as if he would fall from the horse. Embraced from both sides, they led him to the camp. And when he was in the tent, he lay there – and it was a touching sight for all – uttering only one phrase: “By George, by George,” he spoke. And so he spoke nothing until the morning, when he gave up his spirit to the Lord.
He passed away in the year 6935 (1477) on the 19th day of July, on a Saturday, at the 5th hour of the day.
